So, what is RAL? On the whole, RAL is not a standard, but it is an institute. Its full name is “German Institute of Quality Assurance and RAL Certification”. Under the pressure of constant demands of German paint producers in 1927 the Institute established standard for colour spectrum, having devided it into ranges and marking each colour with unique digital index, comprehensible in different industries. From that time on alongside with the appearance of new colours the standard repeatedly expended. RAL might be named as German PANTONE. Nowadays the standard consists of thousands of colours and undertones. Below You can find a basic colormap.
